Recognising and Recovering from Professional Burnout

BHRIGHT EDGE Counselling Team·2 May 2024· 8 min read

Burnout has become one of the most common challenges among working professionals in India, particularly in high-pressure sectors like IT, finance, and healthcare.

What is Burnout? Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and feelings of ineffectiveness. It's recognised by the WHO as an occupational phenomenon.

Stage 1: The Honeymoon Phase High energy, commitment, and enthusiasm. Often the stage where people overcommit and ignore rest.

Stage 2: Onset of Stress Work becomes less enjoyable. Physical symptoms (headaches, poor sleep) begin. Social withdrawal starts.

Stage 3: Chronic Stress Persistent fatigue, resentment towards work, increasingly impaired performance. Relationships begin suffering.

Stage 4: Burnout Complete exhaustion. Inability to cope. Physical illness becomes common. Professional help is essential.

Recovery Strategies - Acknowledge and name the problem – recovery begins with honesty - Take genuine time off – real disconnection, not just physical distance from the office - Reassess your values and priorities – burnout often signals a mismatch - Rebuild gradually – don't return to full capacity immediately - Professional counselling provides personalised, evidence-based support
