5 Interior Design Principles for Compact Homes

BHRIGHT EDGE Design Team·15 May 2024· 5 min read

A smaller home doesn't mean a cramped life. Here are five principles we apply in every compact interior project.

1. Vertical Space is Underused Most homeowners forget the vertical dimension. Floor-to-ceiling storage, elevated beds with drawers beneath, and tall bookshelves dramatically increase functional storage without taking floor space.

2. Light is Your Biggest Tool Natural light makes spaces feel larger. We prioritise sheer curtains over heavy drapes, mirrors to reflect light, and light-toned walls (off-white, soft sage, pale stone) to maximise brightness.

3. Multifunctional Furniture Earns Its Space Every piece of furniture in a compact home should justify its footprint. Sofa beds, ottomans with storage, extendable dining tables, and fold-down desks all serve multiple purposes.

4. Visual Continuity Prevents Choppiness Using the same flooring material throughout a small home, avoiding too many competing patterns, and creating sightlines from one room to the next all make the space feel coherent and larger.

5. Declutter as a Design Strategy Minimalism isn't about owning less – it's about displaying less. Good storage design hides everyday items so that what you see is curated and calm.
